…The Giant Lizard of El Hierro is not merely a unique jewel in the animal World. It is a symbol epitomising the fight for survival, the sense of belonging of generations of inhabitants of the Island of El Hierro. Since 1985, «Save the Giant Lizard» has launched several projects to safeguard the future of the lizard. This book pays tribute to their endeavours while raising awareness on the urgency of protecting nature and species endemic to the Canary Islands. That is why the local Island Council of El Hierro has had no qualms in supporting publication of thes book. Congratulations are also due to Mr Miguel A. Rodríguez Domínguez who has wholeheartedly dedicated his technical expertise.
Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Domínguez. Doctor in Biological Sciences from the University of La Laguna, with a PhD thesis that addresses new aspects of the biology and ecology of the smooth lizard. For 12 years, he has run the Canary Island Gobernment´s El Hierro Giant Lizard Breeding and Research Centre. He has presented his work in many talks about this endangered species, al well as attending national and international conferences and publishing in specialist scientific journals. He currently works as a biologist co-ordinating the Biodiversity Section of the El Hierro Cabildo (Island Council) Department of the Environment, studying aspects related to the conservation of protected natural spaces, teh recovery of the endangered flora and fauna of the island and the ecology of all Canary Island lizards, as well as directing the Giant Lizard Recovery Plan that was recently adoted by the Canary Island Government. Awards that he has won include the Jose Padron Machin Commication Prize.
